Yanik vs Terry Dean…Who Wins?

I’m not about to make any judgments about who’s best…Yanik Silver or Terry Dean. They’re both great examples to follow and I read both of their blogs. My opt-in split test this month involved Terry’s “10 Key Strategies…” report & Yanik’s “Greatest Marketing Secrets” report. So who won? We all won. I got more subscribers and they got their reports into more people’s hands. As for which one converted more visitors into subscribers, it was close but Terry’s report did slightly better.

First of all let’s look at in-line opt-in forms vs hover (or pop-up) windows. The hover windows might be annoying but they destroyed the in-line opt-in form in my test. Overall, the conversion rate on hover windows was 16.9% vs 2.8% for the in-line form. So adding a hover window is a good idea if you want more subscribers.

Yanik’s report actually converted better for the in-line form: 2.9% vs 2.6%. But Terry’s report converted better in the hover window: 19.0% vs 14.3%. And overall more new subscribers requested Terry’s report than Yanik’s report. The next step is to write my own report and test it. I’ll get to that soon enough but in the meantime I didn’t use that as an excuse not to test and improve opt-in conversion rates.

This month I’m switching to multivariate testing using MuVar. Split-testing only allows you to test one variable at a time. Multi-variate testing allows you to test several variables simultaneously. In addition, the aweber form is very limited as far as the variables you can test and MuVar solves that issue. Another advantage of MuVar is that it only has to be set up once. Since you can test several variables simultaneously, there is no need to set-up a new test every month as there is with split-testing. You can keep adding new variables and new versions of variables (i.e. headlines, privacy policies, etc.) but that can be done in minutes.

Aaron Brandon recently shared the results of his split-test and just released a product that tells you exactly how to do it. It’s only $20 so I bought it. It turns out there was one little step I probably would have wasted hours trying to figure out so the report saved me hours of time & frustration and was easily worth $20. But it’s only $20 until his special offer expires which will be within the next day or two. My opt-in rates have improved significantly in the past 60 days since I started testing and I’ll bet yours will too so why not get started today?

    1. Maybe I’m biased, but I’ll take Terry Dean over a member of the good old boy’s club any day of the week.

I had to show up for a blog post titled “Yanik vs Terry Dean…Who Wins?”

Very smart testing by the way…and your hover ad conversion percentage is definitely doing well.

      [Terry,

Thanks for your comment. I wondered if you or Yanik would show up. I figured a headline mentioning you & Yanik might attract some visitors.

i had the impression that muvar could only be used on html pages only. so on blogs or pages running any kind of php or asp setups.

      did i miss something?

if you could drop me an email that would be huge man.
      thanks

      [Joel,

I'm already using MuVar for the inline opt-in form on this blog. It can be used on more than just html pages. Use your imagination.
