Copywriting is an important part of making money online. I don’t know what the textbook definition is but on the Internet it’s the words that get website visitors to take some action whether that’s opting in to your list or buying a product or something else.
Even if all you do is affiliate marketing, copywriting is important because if the sales letter you send traffic to doesn’t convert visitors into customers you’re not going to make any money and you should be keeping track of the conversion rates.
There are many copywriters better than me but I write my own copy and it does convert visitors into opt-ins and customers. I’ve even been paid to write copy for others but for now that’s not something I’m interested in doing.
We’re all different but the way I learned was by reading sales letters written by others…especially those written by copywriters who charge thousands of dollars for their services. You can see what they do and “swipe” it. That means adapting a proven headline (or some other part of the sales letter) to your offer. It’s a common practice and there’s nothing wrong with it as long as you don’t blatantly plagiarize.
There are also several books available. The first one I got was “The Ultimate Sales Letter” by Dan Kennedy. You can get in bookstores or on Amazon for about $10. There are also some free resourses I found helpful:
- The Gary Halbert Letter (I recommend the “Boron Letters”)
- John Carlton’s Marketing Rebel Rant
- Gary Bencivinga’s Bencivinga Bullets
All of these guys are highly paid copywriters.
And I recently found two good posts about copywriting on a few other blogs I read. The first is My Seven-Step Copywriting Process by Michel Fortin, another highly paid copywriter. I liked the QUEST formula.
The second is How to Get a Copywriting Education for under $100 by Terry Dean who has been very successful online. He also happens to be a fellow Hoosier. I grew up in Valparaiso if you’re scoring at home.
Copywriting is so important to making money online that good copywriters charge $5,000+ and have people lining up to pay those fees. Whether you want to take the time to learn this profitable skill is your call but you won’t regret the effort. When you can write words that sell, you can write your own ticket.
