Who’s in Charge?

Here’s another of the 8 Patterns of Highly Effective Entrepreneurs.  At first, I thought I might be deficient in this one but it turns out I’m not.  The book says entrepreneurs have an overwhelming urge to be in charge. I took that to mean in charge of people and I have no desire to be in charge of employees.  All I want is the freedom to wake up every morning and do whatever I want to do, whenever and wherever I want to do it.  But it turns out that’s exactly what the author meant.

The operative idea here is freedom, not power.  The author quickly says:  “Let’s rephrase that.  Entrepreneurs have a fierce aversion to the very thought of reporting to a boss.  (Perhaps because most of them once did.)  They just can’t imagine taking marching orders from another human being when they know they could do the job better.”  I’m not sure I could have said it better myself.

Nobody really likes to take orders.  Do they?  But for some reason most people do it 5 days per week in exchange for a paycheck (the size of which is determined by the employer), a few weeks paid vacation, and fringe benefits.  But entrepreneurs aren’t like most people, swapping hours for dollars, being used as the leverage to make someone else wealthy, and having the activities they perform for the majority of their waking hours decided by someone else is not even a remote possibility.

If that describes your current situation and you just got nauseous, you might want to read this post:  Quit Your Job Immediately!  It’s been over four years now and I’m still alive and kicking.  My only regret is that I didn’t opt out of corporate America sooner.  I spent too much time listening to unqualified opinions from people with jobs.  What the he!! do people with jobs know about being an entrepreneur?  Not a damn thing!

The bottom line is this:  Whether you wake up and go to work for someone else or use that time to build your own business is entirely your choice.  You’re under no obligation to have a job.  If you have a job, you’ve chosen that road so don’t whine and complain and blame other people if you don’t like it.  All you have to do is make different choices.  Who’s in charge of your life?
