Where Do You Get Your Ideas?

Do you get your ideas from reading books or watching TV?  Or is it somewhere else?  It all starts with the thoughts bouncing around between your ears.  Thoughts turn into ideas.  And if you take action, ideas turn into reality through plans and goals.  But your thoughts are the seeds planted in your head that turn into ideas.

What’s the difference between reading books and watching TV?  I suppose that depends on what books you’re reading and what you watch on TV.  But here’s an example.  I did a book review on The Long Tail a few posts ago.  On the back cover, there was a testimonial that said the book belonged on my book shelf between The Tipping Point and Freakonomics.  So I figured those were probably books worth reading too.  The Tipping Point was already checked out of the library so I read Freakonomics.  Then I read Good to Great.  So now my thoughts are about long tails, long tail keywords, selling less of more, questioning conventional wisdom, how to go from good to great, etc.  Those thoughts are connected to making money online.

What about watching TV?  I basically don’t watch anything but sports on TV and I use the word watch loosely.  I’m almost always either reading a book or doing something online.  You don’t really have to watch a game very closely.  You can look up when the crowd gets loud and if you miss a play, they’ll show a replay.  So I’m going to have to pretend here.

What about someone who’s watching American Idol?  They get to see all the commercials about what shows are coming up next and the movies that are coming out this weekend.  So at the end of the night your thoughts might be about who’s going to be voted off of American Idol next, who are tonight’s guests on Jay Leno, and the Spiderman movie coming out this Friday.  I watch Jay Leno occasionally and he’s funny but in all seriousness, how are any of those thoughts going to help you make money online?

Stop wasting time watching stupid stuff on TV when your time could be invested in higher-impact activities like reading books or writing sales letters or creating products or creating blogs.  There are just too many better ways to spend my time than watching TV.
