The Fifth Ingredient

As I toured the Guinness Brewery last month, I saw the ingredients needed brew the world’s best-selling stout: barley, hops, yeast, & water.  The next sign I saw mentioned a 5th ingredient.  That ingredient turned out to be the master brewer…Arthur Guinness.

The plaque said: “Arthur Guinness did not invent stout but many would say he perfected it.  All stouts are brewed from the same basic ingredients of barley, water, hops, and yeast…but the essence of Guinness Beer, the secret which distinguishes it from other beers, is the brewing, and for that we can thank Arthur Guinness.”

If you think about it, the concept of the fifth ingredient applies almost universally.  Many bands use the same instruments but some are more successful than others.  The difference is the people playing the instruments.  Lots of people have started Internet businesses and some are more successful than others.  We all have basically the same tools available.  The difference is the people using the tools.

I don’t know who started the first Internet business but it doesn’t really matter.  Just like today’s Guinness master brewers need barley, hops, yeast, & water; successful online businesses need traffic and a way to monetize that traffic among other things.  And just like Guinness master brewers are better at taking their ingredients and brewing stout, some are better than others at driving traffic to their sites and monetizing that traffic.

Having the right tools on your computer won’t accomplish much if you don’t have the drive, determination, and passion to learn how to best use them.  And your business won’t grow if you don’t test & track results and experiment with new techniques to find out what works best.  If you don’t have a passion for your business like Arthur Guinness had for brewing stout, you’re not likely to be successful.  Do you have that passion and willingness to dedicate yourself to mastering the art & science of making money online?

If you’re not sure where to start or are low on funds, I can help.  My intern program shows you how to build & run a successful online business and it won’t cost you a dime.  You can learn more here:  CyberCa$hology Intern Program

    1. Very nice post Robert. I think that some people dilute their enthusiasm when considering an internet business with negative thoughts such as “There’s a million other people doing the same thing, who’s ever going to notice me?” We are the very soul of our business which is that special element that makes it unique. Your analogies pertaining to Guinness and with bands are right on!

      [Jack,

Thanks for leaving a comment. As far as negativity goes, I think you're right. The Henry Ford quote comes to mind "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right."

    2. We ate out yesterday in a restaurant, but the food was unexceptional, the service lacklustre. It was obvious that the people running the restaurant were just interested in making money. They had the knowledge and even the skills, but seriously lacked the passion to run their business. What a waste!
