Stupid people are a little amusing and a lot annoying. I got an email message from a stupid person the other day. This person signed up for one of my autoresponders, double confirmed, and opted-out a few hours later which is fine. It also reminds me I should use an email address that doesn’t get to me so I won’t have to read these annoying messages.
This stupid person didn’t realize that he or she had opted out and in fact thought I was somehow preventing them from opting-out which is ridiculous. As far as I know that’s against the law and if people don’t want to be on my list, I don’t want them on my list. It’s as simple as that.
Anyway, this person went on some tirade and threatened to contact the FTC. I just shook my head, laughed and thought what an idiot. This person double-opted in, opted-out a few hours later, it’s all recorded in my aweber account and now this stupid person it threatening to contact the government to complain about me.
Maybe someday, autoresponders will be so sophisticated they will be able to reject stupid people who try to subscribe. Something like: “Sorry, you’re too stupid. Here’s your sign.” Ultimately, I never even bothered to respond to this stupid person. Why should I? It’s not really a big deal to me but I still decided to blog about it. Who else has a good story about stupid people?

Robert as I read your post I was in total agreement. I received an email from a current/former list subscriber who was upset about the download link being broken. (NOT)
Its amazing that these people have the mindset of something for nothing and even when its right in front of them they launch the “I SUE YOU” tirade to try to get what they want. But its already right before them. I can’t read it for them to. You know what I mean.

Todd,
I know what you mean. As long as there are people in the world, a certain percentage of them will be stupid and there’s nothing we can do to change that…but we can do things to deal with them less…or preferably not deal with them at all.

Hey Robert,
I have a number of stories about stupid people. So many I could probably write a book about them. Sometimes it’s best to let them stay in their own little world.
I was going to tell you to send them a link to the FTC, but that would require contacting them which they opted-out of.

Thanks for the comment Aaron. For a second I thought about giving them the contact information to the FTC too…but that would have meant contacting them like you say so I didn’t waste any more time with it.

Shucks, 100 degrees in the shade must be getting to you guys
Seriously, what do you think of JB’s recent blog entry about filtering out the freebie email addresses from the list responders you use?
regards
Hi Mark,
Thanks for leaving a comment. I saw JB’s post. I have not implemented the suggestion yet but it doesn’t sound like a bad idea. I do notice I get some kind of spam complaint report from aweber periodically. I should check and see how many of the complaints are from free email addresses. I did check the email address of this particular stupid person and it was not a freebie email address. There’s nothing wrong with freebie email addresses though. I use them too. They have their place.

I am always amazed at subscribers that get freaked out from email auto responders- like what is the big deal- even if they could not opt out, which of course aweber and get response type systems require, they could not just delete the simple email?? Why get all annoyed over something so simple! Like we don’t get 200+ emails per day we don’t want anyways!
Thanks for leaving a comment Rebekah.
I hear you, but no matter what some people will just whine and complain. It must make them feel better.
Robert
