What Standards Do You Measure Yourself Against?

I was listening to a radio station the other day and heard a commercial that went something like this: The average American household makes $35,000 per year. The average IT professional makes $70,000 per year. That’s good news…if you’re an IT professional…” I have no idea if those figures are accurate but that’s not important.

It was a commercial to attend some type of school to get training to become an IT professional. I thought to myself what a load of crap that is. Maybe it’s true that IT professionals find it easy to get jobs and make more money than average. But what standard are you comparing yourself against?

If you want to create a million dollar business either online or offline, you shouldn’t be comparing yourself against people who swap hours for dollars. Millionaires make on average $83,333 per MONTH. So while some people might be ecstatic about making $70,000 per year, I think it sounds pathetic.

And on top of that you have to work for someone else who decides what you’ll do 40 or more hours per week. No thanks. Been there, done that. I’m not knocking education. I went to college too and there are probably worse things to do with four years of your life but all I ever learned was how to work for someone else and I never wanted to work for someone else. Of course, that was my choice. I could have picked a different major and learned how to start my own business but you don’t really need to go to college to do that.

Look at the standards you’re comparing yourself against. It reminds of the the British Naval office who’s superior wrote on his evaluation: “Repeatedly sets low standards and fails to meet them.”

All I’m saying is don’t be happy because you might be doing better than “most people” because most people set low standards for themselves. Set high standards (aka goals) and put a plan together to help yourself meet them. If you want to be a millionaire, don’t compare yourself to the standards of people who have jobs or you might get a false sense of security.
