No this isn’t an announcement that I’m turning off comments. I have gotten a few spam comments but not too many.
I’ve been perusing the Internet looking for other blogs to recommend. Today I found several blogs that didn’t hold my interest so why would I recommend you waste your time and visit them. I won’t…but I did notice something interesting.
Most of the blogs I visited today have turned off comments while I have not. This blog is relatively new so I thought perhaps these blogs were getting a lot more traffic than me but upon further review that doesn’t appear to be the case based on Alexa ranking. My Alexa ranking has climbed from about 1.6 million roughly 6 weeks ago to nearly 300,000. That’s still not a very high Alexa ranking but a vast improvement over 1.6 million and climbing.
All the blogs I visited had Alexa rankings of 800,000 or more so it sure doesn’t seem like they’re getting more visitors than I am. One of them even lamented that “despite using 2 spam filters” comments were being shut off.
I wonder what spam filters these bloggers are using. I’m only using Askimet which I didn’t even know about. It came with the default install and it seems to be working fine. I did have to register for a WordPress API key. I had to copy & paste that key into the plugin for it to work. I wonder if others just have not made the effort to get a WordPress API key and for that reason are not using Askimet.
This should not be construed as an invitation for spam comments. I figured at some point I would need to turn off comments but not yet. So why do you figure others are getting so many spam comments and I’m not. Any comments?

I had comments off for a short while but turned them back on. The spam rolls in but I also started filtering certain keywords.
Eventually I think the answer will be to modify the comment form to at least keep the automated bots at bay.
