Do You See What I See?

There’s a popular Christmas song in America (maybe all over the world for all I know) called Do You Hear What I Hear? One of the lyrics is “do you see what I see?” That’s a good question. Not because what I see is any better or more accurate than what you see but you can put two people in the same situation and they can see totally different things.

There’s the story of the shoe company that sent two salesmen to Africa in search of new opportunities. Both salesmen saw the same thing but they saw it quite differently. In other words, one didn’t see what the other saw. The first salesman reported that there were lots people BUT none of them wore shoes so there wasn’t much opportunity. The second salesman couldn’t contain his enthusiasm. He was excited about the huge opportunity considering there were lots of people AND none of them wore shoes. What would you see?

You probably aren’t surprised that I see tremendous opportunities for making money online. But it might surprise you that I see more money in other markets than the “make money online” market. Sure there’s a ton of money in the make money online market and there’s no reason you can’t get a piece of the pie but it’s not my favorite market. I’m a student of marketing so I’ve learned online marketing and I started this blog to share information and to promote information products that I create but I plan to apply what I’ve learned to other markets of interest which I’ll keep to myself for now.

The “make money online” market is quite jaded. It’s tougher to make a sale when the people you’re selling to already know all your marketing strategies.  Think about it.  In any sport, how effective would the offense be if the defense always knew what play it was running?  A tactic known is a tactic blown. They’re also skeptical because of all the scam artists who sell crap. That only makes it more difficult for people who sell products that deliver what they promise. Applying these strategies in markets where they aren’t known is where the opportunity lies. There will always be a “make more money” market because people will always want to make more money. But there are plenty of other evergreen markets full of people willing to buy a solution to a specific problem.

While the opportunities to make money online are enormous and growing. I see even more opportunity offline. I said I was a student of marketing not just marketing online. Most of the direct response marketing strategies used online today were invented and used offline over 100 years ago. The Internet has definite advantages but any business that doesn’t incorporate offline marketing into the mix is leaving a lot money on the table. What do you see?

    1. I agree 100% with what you just said. It’s so dead on that I can’t add anything to it. Congrats’ on punching through 100K on Alexa!

      [Richard,

Thanks. You are getting pretty close yourself. It won't be long.

    2. Oooh 99,487 Alexa today.

Congratulations Robert. You are officially a real site :-)

      [Martin,

Thanks for the comment. I've finally broken the 100,000 barrier and now I'm teetering on the brink...not far from going back to the other side. One thing I can say is don't take two weeks off like I did in June...or was it July. Anyway, at that point my Alexa rank was rising and I was around 150,000. In those two weeks of not making a post I sunk like a rock to 200,000+. If you don't keep posting, everything you've done for months can be wiped out quickly. I learned my lesson.

As a reader of both Richard and your blog. Way to go Robert on your Alexa ranking!

I’ve seen you grind it out on your blog, giving genuine insight . You’re definitely rising to the top and way beyond average.

      [Jen,

Thank you. I appreciate your kind words. Some days are a grind but most are not. I mean if you're actually building an Internet business as I am it's not very difficult to come up with things to write about. It gets easier over time as you get the flywheel moving.

    5. I am a firm believer in the power of changing your perspective. I have seen the power of changing even a single word (like “marketing” vs “marketing online”) and I look forward to the new perspectives you have to share with us!

      P.S. Congrats on #99,487!

      [Wayne,

Thank you. You're right. Small changes can make a big difference.
