This is a strange book to review on a how to make money online blog, isn’t it? The book was written by Gene Simmons, the front man for the band KISS. I know what you’re probably thinking. Why do I want to read a book about debauchery? That’s what I thought too but don’t judge a book by it’s cover.
The book was recommended by Dan Kennedy. He’s one of the highest paid copywriters on the planet and writes a successful marketing newsletter I read. So I just took his word for it. He was right. It was well worth reading.
It turns out Gene Simmons is an incredibly successful entrepreneur. The book has very little to do with the band KISS and more to do with the entrepreneurial endeavors of Gene Simmons. The title of a book is like a headline and which title do you think sells more books: “Gene Simmons Entrepreneurial Insights” or “Sex, Money, Kiss”? Exactly.
I was shocked to learn that he can’t stand the smell of alcohol, has never been drunk in his life, and has never done drugs either. I’m guilty of stereotyping. He’s not your typical rock star.
Like most successful people, he’s got some crazy ideas you may not agree with but he definitely doesn’t follow the herd. There are some great examples of how he shunned the advice of the so-called “experts” and made millions of dollars.
He had big dreams and wasn’t afraid to follow them. He put himself through college with his knowledge of comic books, then he turned three of his passions (comic books, horror movies, and rock & roll) into a band. I don’t want to spoil it for you. Just go read the book.
I actually sent him an email and he responded…well somebody responded. Who knows if it was really him. But just the fact that I got a response impressed me even more.
It may be hard to find at your local bookstore. It wasn’t in stock at Barnes & Noble. They offered to special order it for me but I declined. I found it at one of my favorite places, the local public library, and read it for free. I also read Tommy Lee’s book - whatever it’s called - at the library. I read the whole book which is more than I can say for some books. He’s had an interesting life but he’s your prototypical rock star unlike Gene Simmons.
