When I used to go to real estate investing seminars years ago, Ron LeGrand would always be critical of people he said were “walking over the dollars to get to the dimes.” At every seminar, there were always people selling related products & services like bandit signs (these are the “We Buy Houses” signs you see on street corners), postcard mailing services, etc.
Bandit signs cost about $1 each if you buy them in bulk and postcards aren’t very expensive either. Considering the average profit for a real estate deal was around $20,000 at the time, Ron would always roll his eyes, shake his head and wonder aloud why these people were walking over the dollars to get to the dimes. In other words, they should be using the signs & postcards themselves to make $20,000 instead of selling them to other people for $1.
Lots of people are walking over the dollars to get to the dimes online too. AdSense is the biggest culprit. There’s nothing wrong with AdSense. It has it’s place in an Internet business but in and of itself AdSense is not a business. If you think about it, AdSense publishers are walking over the dollars to get to the dimes.
Sure there are people making 7 figures in AdSense but if they’d use that lump three feet above their butt, they could make exponentially more. All AdSense publishers are doing is finding leads for the people who are making the real money. People who make 50 cents or a dollar on average every time somebody clicks on their AdWords ad are happy to pay AdSense publishers a dime for the click. Why in the world anyone would be willing to settle for a dime when they could be making a dollar is a mystery to me…especially considering the big G seems to arbitrarily change the rules whenever they feel like it. They must be lazy, ignorant, or both.
I don’t have any more sympathy for AdSense publishers who go broke than I do for people who get laid off from their jobs. They all cry foul and complain about how unfair it is. Maybe it is unfair but it’s a fact of life. How old were you when you figured out life was not fair? 12? 15? 18? Why do so many adults still whine about something they learned when they were teenagers decades ago and can’t change?
People have been getting laid off from jobs ever since I was a kid. Why do most people choose to live the lie that they have a secure job with the perfect recession-proof company? Such a position does not exist. It’s been proven repeatedly over time. I remember when the airline and steel industries were thriving. Times changed and both industries have been struggling for years if not decades. Companies merge and proceed to purge jobs to save costs. I remember when Hewlett-Packard merged with Compaq and thousands of people who were lulled into the false security of the “HP Way” were shocked to lose their jobs. Enron & Arthur Andersen both crumbled quickly when corporate scandals hit them. A day rarely goes by when some company is not affected by a change in the economy, mergers & acquisitions, or corporate scandal. Why does it still seem to surprise some people?
It baffles me how people act surprised when they suddenly lose their jobs. Have they not been paying attention to what’s been happening around them their whole lives? Most people with jobs not only have a false sense of security; they’re also walking over the dollars to get to the dimes. They’re working wholesale. The real money is in owning the business.
The same goes for AdSense publishers. Almost every time the Big G changes the rules or the algorithm, you’ll hear people crying about how their “business” was wiped out overnight. Nonsense. These people never had a business. It takes a real dummy to have a single revenue source they know arbitrarily & frequently changes the rules and think they have a business. Wake up! It’s more like a time bomb ready to explode at any time.
Stop walking over the dollars to get to the dimes and start building a real business. If you don’t know where to start you can join my intern program and learn how to build a business for free like Richard McLaughlin did. Here’s what Richard had to say about the intern program:
“Starting an online business was something I always wanted to do but I was low on funds due to an unexpected layoff from a large software company. I started your intern program expecting to learn very little and I was shocked. Each task has been a learning experience that will help me build my own successful Internet business. “

Speaking of company lay-offs, The Sharper Image and Lillian Vernon both filed for bankruptcy protection this week. Thousands of employees will lose their jobs in the coming weeks.
[Thanks Ryan...I didn't know that but it's not surprising. A week doesn't go by where some company doesn't file for bankruptcy protection, get caught up in a corporate scandal, or merge and eliminate jobs to save money. It's mind-boggling why most people with jobs choose to bury their heads in the sand and think it won't happen to them. Depending on an employer for a paycheck is like playing Russian roulette with your financial future.]
That’s an excellent viewpoint. I’ve included that as a quote on my site! I wonder if my blog is a diversion from making real money.
BTW, drop the stupid question below… one captcha is more than enough!
[Thanks for putting my quote on your site. This might be the first time I've ever been quoted. It's kind of cool.
As for the stupid question, I'll check that out. Since I'm the admin I don't see all those captchas and whatever else I have enabled to combat spam comments but if you mentioned it others probably feel the same way and I might be inadvertently discouraging people from leaving comments which is not what I want to do.]
Well, this piece is one approach, but I don’t know if it’s the way I’d go. See, I also feel that people should take control of their destiny; buy instead of rent, self-employ instead of work for somebody else. But I don’t if I could casually put down people for their life choice because they haven’t bought my book or system yet.
It’s very easy from the mountain top when you have information. You can look down and see all the mistakes. But if you’re down there in the valley you can’t always see a way out.
Maybe you would consider putting some of your strategy out there so people can judge the merit of what you know-for instance I came here hoping to learn a little more, but instead I’m hearing how you can’t believe people aren’t doing the right thing. Ok, what’s the right thing?
[Dave,
Thanks for your comment. As far as what's "the right thing", I can't answer that for you. I've addressed that question a few times perhaps most recently in a post titled "One Size Does Not Fit All." What's "right" for you may not be "right" for me. That doesn't mean I'm wrong & you're right, it just means what's "right" for us is different. Most people probably are better off with jobs and there's nothing wrong with that. It's not always easy being an entrepreneur and most people aren't willing to persevere and overcome all the obstacles.
