I’ve been using an On-Page Optimization Software that contains a built-in database of over 100,000 sites and their ranking data on all three major search engines. It allows you to score your own web page against this database for higher ranking on the selected search engine for a given keyword.
Give it your URL and search phrase and in seconds hundreds of factors are compared to the internal database and scored. You’re given a detailed report showing each section of your web page along with a score telling you how well you matched the high ranking pages (and avoided the mistakes of the low ranking pages). And an overall score. The higher the score the better your site matches the attributes of the higher ranking pages in the database. Make one change, run the software again, and instantly see if that change increased or decreased your score.
OK so now that the background is out of the way. I installed a WordPress blog on a domain. The default installation scored 118 for Google on a certain search term. I spent some time making one change at a time to see its effect on the score. A short time later, my URL scored 2368. That’s a 2007% increase. Does that mean I increased the on-page optimazation by 2007%? I don’t think so. But it means the attributes of my URL more closely match those of other high ranking pages in the database of over 100,000 sites.
The number 2337 might not mean much by itself but I used the software to compare my URL against the top 10 results in Google. The top 10 sites scored between 2 and 909. So my URL with a score of 2337 scores 261% higher than the top 10 site with the highest score. The URL and search term are obvious but if you haven’t figured it out, I’m not putting it in writing yet.
So do I rank in the top 10. No. Not yet. On-page optimization is roughly 40% search engine algorithm. Another 40% (more or less) is links and the top 10 sites have more links than my site does. That’s what I’m working on now and there are over 100 million results for this search-term. But it’s nice to know that I’m crushing the competition on 40% of the search engine algorithm…40% most people don’t even bother with. And even better to know that I can repeat this for every site I create.
Some of the results were surprising. Some not so surprising. Just changing the default template increased the score by over 200 points. That’s no shock. But some of the plug-ins that make your blog look pretty absolutely kill your score…one of them by over 300 points. Are you using it? If you remember what this blog looked like last week, you’ll notice it looked different…about 1000 points different.
Do your ranking a favor and check out this On Page Ranking Software. (Damn! I thought there was an affiliate program for this tool. Looks like I was wrong. I’m a reptile brain. I tend to act before I think and this is a good example of what happens sometimes but in any event this is a great tool I would recommend if I didn’t make a dime…and I don’t!)
